I have been enjoying Tomodachi Life all summer and one thing I particularly appreciate is its total innocence. It is designed for low-stakes drama and vignettes of rather mundane life scenarios. It's all very jovial and light-hearted. Someone receives a bad gift, there's a minor argument, or a Mii experiences a strange dream.
I have been introducing darker, transgressive elements into the game that have transformed it into my own surreal theatre for the absurd.
An elderly Mii lives out his dream of being an adult baby. Another Mii has made a robot clone of his crush, only for his crush and her robotic replica to become best friends. These are the most digestible examples.
The Miis bumble around carrying the weight of incendiary notions and taboo subjects they weren't programmed to understand, while the game's engine keeps churning out saccharine, upbeat music. I get a real kick out of the utterly jarring incongruence.
The game has become a dialectical playground for me, a sequestered space where I can examine chaotic impulses and dark subversion without any of it affecting reality.
I guess that's also why I write.
